Are you passionate about Artificial Intelligence, Coding, Cloud Computing, and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy from anywhere within the EEA?
Sunna Group, headquartered in Åre, Sweden, is a dynamic and rapidly growing company specializing in the development and operation of utility-scale solar power plants and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). We are at the forefront of the green energy revolution, deploying cutting-edge technology to build a more sustainable future.
To stay ahead, we are constantly exploring innovative ways to optimize our operations, often leveraging cloud infrastructure. We are now seeking a talented and motivated remote Master’s Thesis student (based within the European Economic Area) to join our team and spearhead an exciting pilot project: Developing an Advanced AI Image Analysis System, utilizing Google Cloud Platform (GCP) & GitHub.
The Thesis Project:
This is a unique remote opportunity to apply your AI, machine learning, and cloud skills to real-world challenges in the renewable energy sector. You will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and potentially deploying elements of a proof-of-concept (pilot) system that leverages AI to analyze various types of imagery relevant to our operations, using GCP services.
Potential application areas could include (but are not limited to):
- Analyzing satellite or drone imagery stored and processed on GCP for optimal site selection.
- Automating the monitoring of construction progress using AI models trained/deployed on GCP.
- Developing algorithms for early fault detection in solar panels using thermal or visual imaging, potentially leveraging GCP AI/ML services.
- Assessing grid quality via image analysis managed within GCP.
The final scope will be defined collaboratively based on your interests, skills, and our current business needs. The key goal is to build a functional pilot demonstrating the feasibility and value of AI-driven image analysis, integrated with cloud capabilities, for Sunna Group.
Your Role & Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques for image analysis applicable to the solar/BESS industry.
- Collaborate effectively with our technical team remotely to define project requirements and success criteria.
- Identify, gather, and preprocess relevant image datasets, potentially managing them within GCP (e.g., Cloud Storage).
- Develop, train, and evaluate deep learning / computer vision models, utilizing GCP resources (e.g., Vertex AI, Compute Engine) where applicable.
- Implement and test the pilot AI image analysis system, considering deployment strategies on GCP.
- Document your methodology, findings, cloud architecture choices, and results comprehensively in your Master’s thesis.
- Present your work and findings remotely to stakeholders within Sunna Group.
Who We Are Looking For:
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s program (or potentially final year Bachelor’s with relevant project experience) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, residing within the European Economic Area (EEA).
- Solid theoretical understanding and practical experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Computer Vision.
- Proficiency in Python and common AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Scikit-learn) and computer vision libraries (e.g., OpenCV).
- Proven experience working with cloud platforms, specifically Google Cloud Platform (GCP), for tasks such as data storage (GCS), model training (Vertex AI), or compute (Compute Engine) is required.
- Experience with image processing techniques and handling image data.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent self-discipline, ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage your project timeline effectively in a remote setting.
- Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal) for remote collaboration.
- A genuine interest in renewable energy and sustainability is highly desirable!
What We Offer:
- A cutting-edge thesis project with real-world impact in a high-growth industry.
- The flexibility of working remotely from anywhere within the European Economic Area (EEA).
- Office space in Åre or in Gothenburg
- The opportunity to build something tangible and contribute directly to innovation at Sunna Group.
- Hands-on experience developing and potentially deploying AI solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Access to industry knowledge and expert supervision from our experienced team via remote channels.
- A dynamic, collaborative, and supportive remote work environment.
- Potential access to relevant data and cloud resources (subject to availability and project scope).
- An opportunity to network within the renewable energy sector.
Location: Remote originating from within the European Union (Sweden is preferred)
Start Date: Spring/Summer 2025 (aligned with the current university thesis period)
Duration: Typically 20 weeks / 30 ECTS (or as per university requirements).
