Sunna and Cloudberry join forces for 20 MW battery storage project

Sunna Group and Cloudberry Clean Energy ASA (Cloudberry) are both expanding their operations in large-scale battery energy storage (BESS) through the acquisition of the 20 MW Knutmasso battery project in the municipality of Östhammar.

Sunna Group and Cloudberry announced today that Cloudberry is acquiring the Knutmasso battery storage project, with a capacity of 20 MW, located in the municipality of Östhammar. This is the first transaction in the field of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) that Sunna has carried out and marks an important step in the company’s expansion into energy solutions. For Cloudberry, the project represents a crucial next step in the company’s ongoing efforts to build a Nordic portfolio in energy storage.

This transaction is a natural next step for Sunna Group. We see a growing need for flexibility in the energy system, where battery storage plays a central role. With Knutmasso, we are establishing our first foothold in large-scale BESS and strengthening our offering in the energy solutions of the future, says Marcus Qviberg, CEO of Sunna Group.

The Knutmasso project was developed by Sunna Group and is now being acquired by Cloudberry, which will take over the project’s further development and construction. The transaction is part of an effort to enable greater flexibility in the electricity system and support the integration of more renewable electricity generation.

For Cloudberry, the acquisition of Knutmasso is a clear step forward in the company’s focus on energy storage as a complement to its existing hydro, wind, and solar power generation. Cloudberry is currently completing its first BESS project in Karlstad, and Knutmasso will be an important extension of that line of business. The goal is to continue building a Nordic portfolio of energy storage projects in the coming years.

– We are pleased to have completed our first large-scale BESS transaction together with such a competent, experienced, and forward-thinking partner. The collaboration has been incredibly positive, and we have truly appreciated Cloudberry’s pragmatic and solution-oriented approach from start to finish. Having such a reputable partner now take over provides the project with a solid foundation for continued development, construction, and operation, says Marcus Qviberg.

This is our first joint project with Sunna Group, and we’re impressed by the quality of their project development. We value strong partnerships and see this type of collaboration as an important part of how we want to contribute to the energy transition in the Nordic region, says Beate Norheim, Head of New Technologies at Cloudberry.

The planned energy storage facility is located on former industrial land within an old industrial property that has been unused for some time. The next step for the project’s new owner is to prepare for construction and connection to the power grid. The facility is expected to be operational by 2027.

Knutmasso is a good example of how existing industrial land can be repurposed while also contributing to a more robust electricity system. The facility will support the power grid and create value both locally in the municipality of Östhammar and within the energy system as a whole, says Linus Palmblad, project manager at Cloudberry.

Sunna Group continues to develop projects in both solar power and energy storage, with the goal of contributing to a more flexible and sustainable energy system. At the same time, Cloudberry continues to build a portfolio of wind, hydro, solar, and energy storage projects in the Nordic region, with the goal of combining new renewable generation with flexibility resources that strengthen the power grid and enable the continued electrification of industry and society.

About Sunna Group

Sunna was founded in 2021 with the ambition to increase the amount of solar electricity in the energy system by developing, owning and managing large-scale solar power in the Nordic region. Sunna increases access to green, locally produced solar electricity, which enables faster regional establishment and expansion of companies, as well as support for the electrification of society as a whole. Sunna’s goal is to build 1 gigawatt by 2030. sunnagroup.com
