Positive decision for large-scale solar park in Falköping

The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland has given Sunna Group the green light to build a solar park in the municipality of Falköping on an area of 33 hectares. The future solar park is planned to have a total installed capacity of around 31 megawatts and could be completed as early as next year.

The annual production from the planned solar park in Falköping is estimated at roughly 34 million kilowatt hours per year, which corresponds to about 12 percent of the municipality’s total energy needs. The consultation notification for the project was submitted to the Västra Götaland County Administrative Board for processing in November 2023 and feedback with a decision on approval came as early as the beginning of February 2024.

“It feels unreal to get the go-ahead for a solar park of this size so quickly. Getting a decision within three months from the County Administrative Board for a major energy project must be some kind of record for a production facility. This of course means a lot for the local electricity supply, but also for the local business community as we are all facing a major transition with an increased energy demand”, says Marcus Qviberg, CEO of Sunna Group.

Together with the grid owner Falbygdens Energi, FENAB, it is hoped that the park can be commissioned as early as the fall of 2025.

“We are in an early phase of the application but hope to be able to provide the connection as quickly as possible”, says John Hille, Electricity Network Manager, Falbygdens Energi Nät AB.

“For FENAB and Falköping municipality, this project is an important part of being able to enable the transition in society from fossil to renewable, but also to be able to establish new businesses in the area. The electricity grid in Falbygden has a lot of installed wind power production and we know that solar and wind energy complement each other very well. Usually there is no wind when the sun is shining and vice versa,” continues John Hille.

About Sunna Group AB

Sunna was founded in 2021 with the ambition to increase the amount of solar electricity in the energy system by developing, owning and managing large-scale solar power in the Nordic region. Together with long-term capital partners, Sunna is a sustainable player in the Swedish energy market.
Sunna increases access to green, locally produced solar electricity, which enables faster regional establishment and expansion of companies, as well as support for the electrification of society as a whole. Sunna’s goal is to build 1 gigawatt by 2030 and has now secured permits for a quarter of that capacity.
